Why do college basketball teams play in public exhibitions?

A big reason is to get money for their players.

So sure enough that was part of the deal to bring John Calipari and the University of Arkansas to FedExForum to play an exhibition game against the University of Memphis. The Arkansas players would get a small percentage of the money from ticket sales.
