Geoff Calkins has been chronicling Memphis and Memphis sports for more than two decades. Calkins has been named the best sports columnist in the country five times by the Associated Press sports editors, but still figures his best columns are about the people who make Memphis what it is.
The first Memphis Tiger football player stepped to the lectern to talk about the upcoming opener against UNLV.
Jarvis Greer, the legendary sports anchor who now does color commentary on the radio broadcast, had an important question.
“Could you start by stating your name and position?” he said.
“I’m Manny Covey and I play running back,” the player said.
And that, my fellow Memphians, is where we are.
It’s the start of a new college football season. Intrigue is running high.
