Echols: ‘Walking in Memphis’ isn’t what it once was

A letter to the National Guard in Memphis:
First, thank you for serving our country. No doubt you have a home somewhere, but you’ve left it to come to ours. We know you didn’t choose this post. You go where you’re sent, and that is admirable.
Second, your timing is oddly fitting. You’ve arrived at the height of St. Jude Memphis Marathon training season when the city’s sidewalks thump with the rhythm of pounding feet.
But “Walking in Memphis” isn’t what it once was, and running is no better — at least for women.
