Since Houston won the heated rivalry with Collierville last year, the trophy is sitting in its field house. Whether they keep it will depend on Friday night’s result.

Memphis is well represented in this week’s Tennessee Sports Writers Association high school football rankings.

This week at Shelby Farms, the Division 2-A regional meet will be raced Tuesday and the Class AAA and Class A-AA meets will be raced Wednesday.

Standouts from Brighton, Covington, East, ECS, Fairley and Germantown are up for consideration this week.

Ethan Johnson was honored after a 222-yard, three-touchdown game in rivalry victory against MUS Oct. 18.

The Dragons take over the second spot while the Cougars move up to third after last week’s victory over Lausanne. Unbeaten Covington remains on top.

Undefeated Collierville visits the second-place Tigers in a key 8-6A contest.

The Trojans defeated Goodpasture in a Tuesday night elimination game, and now will play for their first D2-A title against Battle Ground Academy on Thursday.

Wednesday was a day of frustration for Shelby County volleyball powers. Houston High won in state soccer action, while Collierville, Lakeland Prep, and Brighton were knocked out of the girls state soccer tournament.

Led by Breya Dawson, the Briarcrest Saints oust Nashville Father Ryan in Division 2-AA. Houston, Collierville and Northpoint also pick up wins at state. 

Local coaches pointed out that the change prompts fundamental concerns about equity for girls sports.

Charles Snider, Catherine Bowie lead this year’s honorees of outstanding Memphis-area high school golfers.

Collierville and Houston (AAA), Lakeland Prep (A), and ECS, Lausanne and St. George’s (D2-A) will represent Memphis at the state tournament starting Wednesday.

Nora Newhouse of Houston High and Arlington’s Clark Wade remain the leaders with the top girls and boys 5K times.

Collierville and Houston (AAA), Briarcrest (Division 2-AA) and Northpoint (D2-A) all have the talent to contend in their respective divisions.

Fairley remains No. 1 in Class 2A rankings.

Standouts from CBHS, Collierville, Melrose, Sheffield and Whitehaven are up for consideration this week. Voting ends at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24.

Houston, Collierville, Lakeland Prep, St. George’s, ECS and Lausanne advance to girls state soccer tournament, and Northpoint’s volleyball team earns a state berth, too.
