After a blustery opening round Monday, Tuesday was brighter, and the winds were calmer for the second and final day of the TSSAA state golf tournaments.

Houston High (Class 6A) and Mitchell High (2A) are the new Memphis-area teams ranked this week.

Henry O’Keefe of Briarcrest and Sophie Christopher of Houston are in second place in their respective tournaments heading into Tuesday final.

Houston’s Zoe Marsh and CBHS’ Joe Edwards continue to top the charts of top times produced by cross country runners in 2023 through 5K races reported as of Oct. 8, 2023.

Standouts from FACS, Germantown, Melrose, Millington, Northpoint and Trezevant are up for consideration this week. 

Millington quarterback McCoy Pugh accounts for four touchdowns as the Trojans run their record to 7-1.

B.J. Blake puts on a show for his future college Austin Peay, rushing for 268 yards and two touchdowns.

Defending Class AA girls champ Sophie Christopher of Houston just one of several local players and teams who figure to be in the title mix.

FACS running back Brian Shields carried 12 times for 125 yards and scored five times, taking his season total to 25.

Elijah Brinson completed 20 of 24 passes for 285 yards and five touchdowns as the Chiefs won their third game in a row, 42-7.

Totals are through games as of Sept. 29 and are for TSSAA schools in The Daily Memphian coverage area.

The result leaves the Mustangs as the top seed for the district tournament.

Southwind and Houston also move up one space while Bartlett falls.

Bartlett wasn’t able to generate a ton of offense in a Week 7 loss and now must find a way through Germantown’s stout defense.

MUS at No. 3 remains the highest ranked Memphis-area team. Germantown, Southwind and FACS are ranked No. 4 in their classifications.

After a fast — and pleasantly-surprising — start to the season, defending state champs are gearing up for postseason push.

The Brothers went 1-2 in the boys race with Joe Edwards (15:41.30) outsprinting Kaleb Smith (15:43.20) to win the title.

Henry Hurdle is the hero for CBHS as they score all their points in the fourth quarter to secure an important region victory.

Defense carries the day for the Mustangs, as they hold the area’s top-ranked offense in check for most of the game.

Jordan Irvin completed 11 of 15 passes for 320 yards and five touchdowns as the Longhorns defeated region rival Middleton, 54-0, at the Longhorns homecoming.
