Herrington: With the NBA offseason half over, are Grizzlies mostly done?

Chris Herrington has covered the Memphis Grizzlies, in one way or another, since the franchise’s second season in Memphis, while also writing about music, movies, food and civic life. As far as he knows, he’s the only member of the Professional Basketball Writers Association who is also a member of a film critics group and has also voted in national music critic polls for Rolling Stone and the Village Voice (RIP). He and his wife have two kids and, for reasons that sometimes elude him, three dogs.
There’s usually a little bit of breathing room between the twin pillars of the NBA offseason, the rookie draft and the free-agent signing period.
Not this year.
On Friday afternoon at FedExForum, Grizzlies lead executive Zach Kleiman will introduce two of the three rookies the team drafted this week, Zach Edey and Jaylen Wells. (As part of a draft-day trade, second-rounder Cam Spencer will have to wait.)
Roughly 24 hours later, the team will face a decision on the $14.8 million team option for veteran guard Luke Kennard.
Roughly 24 hours after that, at 5 p.m. on Sunday, the NBA free agency negotiation period will begin. If the past is any indication, reported deals around the league will flow out immediately.
So while the draft is just wrapping up, the second half of the offseason won’t wait.
