Herrington: Notes on the Grizzlies’ Ziaire Williams trade, Luke Kennard signing

Chris Herrington has covered the Memphis Grizzlies, in one way or another, since the franchise’s second season in Memphis, while also writing about music, movies, food and civic life. As far as he knows, he’s the only member of the Professional Basketball Writers Association who is also a member of a film critics group and has also voted in national music critic polls for Rolling Stone and the Village Voice (RIP). He and his wife have two kids and, for reasons that sometimes elude him, three dogs.
With two long-expected but somewhat delayed transactions, the Memphis Grizzlies have seemingly tied a bow on their offseason.
Perhaps there will be some more minor nibbling at the end of the roster. Perhaps the team will entertain a contract extension for forward Santi Aldama in the late summer or early fall.
Grizzlies re-sign Luke Kennard
But anything else after this point would be a surprise. With the very much related recent trade of Ziaire Williams to the Brooklyn Nets and this week’s re-signing of Luke Kennard, the Grizzlies seem to mostly have the roster they’ll take into training camp in a couple months.
In anticipation of the Kennard deal, I’ve already taken a more holistic look at the team’s offseason and how it positions them for the season to come.
But now that his transaction has finally happened, let’s dig a little deeper on these most recent moves:
