Memphis assistant coach Cody Toppert appears to be on the move.
College basketball insider Jeff Goodman reported for Stadium on Saturday afternoon that Toppert was headed to LSU to join new coach Matt McMahon.
LSU hired McMahon from Murray State after firing Will Wade. Murray State defeated Memphis, 74-72, on Dec. 10.
Toppert, completing his third season, was the longest-tenured member on coach Penny Hardaway’s staff.
After spending five years in the NBA and NBA G League, Toppert was hired by Hardaway in 2019. The 39-year-old coach quickly established himself as one of the top recruiters on the staff and was an intricate part of developing the offensive scheme.
Toppert interviewed for head coaching opportunities last offseason, so the move doesn’t come as a surprise.
Goodman tweeted the news just hours after The Daily Memphian broke the story that Memphis is facing four Level I and two Level II allegations as a result of an IARP investigation, presumably regarding the recruitment of former Tigers center James Wiseman.
Hardaway will now have to replace at least two assistants, including the opening once held by Rasheed Wallace. Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown’s contract with Memphis expires at the end of April as well.
