Hardaway calls these Tigers ‘totally different,’ but fans may have deja vu

Following Memphis’ 85-72 loss to Arkansas State on Sunday afternoon, there were two different scenes that unfolded inside the media room at FedExForum.

First, you had Red Wolves coach Bryan Hodgson — who brought his young son to the postgame press conference because “you don’t get too many moments like these as a dad” — and guard Joseph Pinion raving about how much the opportunity they’d just taken advantage of meant to their university and community.

Then, you had Memphis players who didn’t show up to speak to reporters.

“Players are gone,” said a Tigers’ program spokesperson. “Sorry.”

This, too, after coach Penny Hardaway had just finished sharing all the reasons why he felt no sense of deja vu after his No. 16 Tigers (7-2) were routed in their own building in what was their second straight lackluster performance since arriving on the national scene at last month’s Maui Invitational.
