Colby Rogers had just dropped a season-high 28 points in the Memphis Tigers’ 87-70 win over then-No. 16 Ole Miss last Saturday at FedExForum, and Rebels coach Chris Beard was queried about the performance.
“No. 3?” Beard asked.
It wasn’t a slight. More of a scouting report thing.
Basketball coaches and their team members can’t be expected to know the name of every player on an opponents’ roster, especially before conference play begins.
So they use numbers.

Roger that, Coach: Yes, Rogers.
Colby Rogers.
Know his name.
“Yeah,” Beard said. “Legitimate shooter.”
Legit, indeed.
