Battle for the Bones: A Tigers fan’s 20-year barbecue rivalry with UAB

While the Memphis Tigers and UAB Blazers prepare to compete in the Battle for the Bones rivalry game on Saturday (6 p.m., ESPN2) at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, fans of each team will battle it out outside of the stadium.

The Battle for the Bones football rivalry dates to the first meeting between the two schools in 1997.

The rivalry only consisted of the football game for the first nine years. But heading into the 2006 matchup, the UAB administration and the football team’s fan club had an idea: The Blazers created a barbecue competition for game day.
