With some players making more than professors, should student-athletes be classified as full-time university employees? A few Memphis Tigers respond.

The former Alabama coach called the University of Memphis by the wrong name as he speculated about the team’s chances for this season’s newly expanded, 12-team College Football Playoff.

As the season begins Saturday, the AP’s national college-football writer also picked Ole Miss and Tennessee to reach the College Football Playoff.

Where does this season rank among most important years in Memphis football? Did the Coaches Poll or the Associated Press Poll get it right in ranking the Tigers against other Group of Five teams?

Defensive back Jordan Grier, defensive lineman Patrick Lucas Jr., defensive back Kobee Minor and linebacker Darryl Minor Jr. all turned in their crimson and cream jerseys for Tigers blue and gray.

“We’ve got a scrimmage tomorrow but this kind of takes their mind off football for a little bit and rightfully so,” Coach Ryan Silverfield said of defensive back An’Darius Coffey and others who visited with children’s hospital patients.

The Memphis Tigers have three conference opponents in 2025 who aren’t on this year’s schedule.

The Tigers have ranked in the top 20 in fewest penalties and penalty yards in each of the past three seasons.

The Memphis Tigers did not get as favorable of a ranking in the Associated Press Poll released on Monday as it did in the USA Today Coaches Poll last week.

The Memphis Tigers offensive line, the unit that is in charge of protecting Tigers QB Seth Henigan, is rounding into form.

The Memphis Tigers’ aspirations to join a higher-profile league than their current one, the American Athletic Conference, are no secret.
