Two sites will serve Germantown residents in need of water Monday, July 24.

Residents can bring their own containers to fill with an unlimited supply of water to Bailey Station Elementary School, 3435 Bailey Station Road in Collierville, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Residents can also receive one case of bottled water at Forest Hill Elementary School, 3368 Forest Hill-Irene Road in Germantown, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Germantown allows water usage for some residents

On Sunday, the City of Germantown announced that municipal water customers east of Forest Hill-Irene Road could resume normal water consumption effective 9 p.m. on that day.

Other municipal water customers should use tap water only for flushing toilets. The water restrictions follow odors in the water detected Thursday, July 20.

The city learned that a diesel generator powering a water plant following a power outage leaked 100 gallons of fuel, which contaminated 4.2 million gallons of water.

Germantown water customers released from the water restrictions were advised to flush their interior service lines to remove water standing in pipes.

Those who have been released from the water restrictions and who have not detected the smell of diesel in their home should open all faucets and allow them to run for five minutes. Afterwards, customers can resume their regular water consumption.

Germantown water test results deliver bad news

Those who have noted odor from the water in their homes should following the Environmental Protection Agency provided steps:

  • Open a couple of cold water taps and run for 15 minutes to clear the line.
  • Open each cold tap one at a time and run that for 5 minutes to clean that specific line.
  • Begin nearest to where water enters the building and move toward the farthest tap.
  • Repeat for the rest of the cold taps.
  • Repeat steps 1 and 2 by running hot water through the taps.
  • Any dishes or clothing washed while the restriction was in place should be rewashed.
  • Water-using devices may require additional cleaning steps in addition to flushing (such as discarding ice). Consult the device manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.
  • If the odor lingers, customers should contact CustomerService@Germantown-TN.gov or dial 901-757-7200
