Raymond Lindsy Laws subconsciously registered the first gunshot fired the morning of Aug. 4, but it wasn’t enough to fully rouse him.

He’d spent the night working at the Southland Casino in West Memphis where he was recently hired as a dealer. Following his 40-minute commute back to DeSoto County, Laws needed sleep.

When the second shot echoed from the quiet Hernando neighborhood on Mason Drive, Laws began to understand what was happening, and by the third shot, he knew with certainty.

Someone was firing a .22 handgun, a sound he was familiar with because that was a weapon his grandfather owned.
