Former Horn Lake alderman indicted

A former Horn Lake alderman is accused of accepting unemployment payments during the COVID-19 pandemic while working as a city official, according to an announcement by DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton made Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Barton said a grand jury returned an indictment against Charlie Roberts, a former Ward 4 alderman, for one count of unemployment fraud between $10,000 and $25,000.

“During the better part of 2020, Mr. Roberts was receiving benefits ... and he was also receiving pay as an alderman,” Barton said during a press conference Wednesday. “Being paid as an alderman is considered full-time pay with benefits, and every time that he was supposed to update his paperwork, he failed consistently to disclose that income.”
