Four DeSoto County governments are providing community shelter for residents as severe weather continues to impact the region.
Southaven, Horn Lake, Olive Branch and Hernando have opened safe rooms and storm shelters as a tornado watch remains in effect for the area until 8 p.m.
Shelter locations in DeSoto County are:
- in Southaven at 7312 U.S. 51
- in Horn Lake at 6341 Ridgewood Road
- in Olive Branch at 9549 Pigeon Roost Road
- in Hernando at 455 Riley St.
The decision to open these shelters follows a week of turbulent weather that has left a trail of damage across DeSoto County.
Late Sunday and early Monday strong winds and heavy rainfall pummeled the area, causing widespread power outages and significant property damage.
Hernando in particular saw considerable impact with downed trees blocking roads, power lines snapped and damage to homes and schools, including Hernando High.
Hernando officials clarified their shelter provides a safe physical space but they do not supply amenities like blankets, food or other provisions.
The facilities will remain open for the duration of the tornado watch to provide a secure location for those in need.
