Calkins has been named the best sports columnist in the country five times by the Associated Press sports editors, but still figures his best columns are about the people who make Memphis what it is.
Memphis Tigers point guard Kendric Davis got a text from Ja Morant and Desmond Bane before Saturday’s game telling him to “go be that killer you are.” Davis didn’t have to be told twice, evidently. He scored 27 points as Memphis knocked off unbeaten Auburn.
