Memphis company out to make pigs’ lives easier with chemical sterilization
Nationally, the U.S. slaughters 120 million hogs a year. Half of them are males and in most cases, they are castrated without anesthesia. Leta Nutt, a former researcher and member of the faculty at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, is making it her job to change the equation in a lab she’s set up at a Tosh Farms pork production facility near Martin, Tennessee. Leta Nutt’s chemical sterilization would do away with surgical castration, usually done without anesthesia.
