Grizzlies Insider: Five non-lottery players who have worked out in Memphis

There used to be a time when teams announced NBA Draft workouts. That time is no longer here.

The Memphis Grizzlies have been bringing in prospects for workouts now for the better part of a month. Most of the big names are expected to remain silent about their process, as to not give away team draft strategy.

But a few of the potential two-way and second-round options have leaked out. With the NCAA withdrawal deadline now in the past, here is a look at a few of the players that have reportedly worked out for the team that remain in the draft pool.

It is important to note that some of these players could also get a look at a potential G League deal.

DJ Horne

Horne was part of NC State’s magic run to the Final Four last season and averaged more than 17 points on better than 40% from the 3-point line. He’s had a number of different workouts for NBA teams, most recently the Golden State Warriors.

At 6-foot-1, he doesn’t possess great size but is a shot creator for himself and teammates. The shooting mixed with playmaking puts him under consideration in the second round.

Quincy Olivari

Olivari was the Big East’s leading scorer with more than 19 points per game last season at Xavier. He transferred from Rice, where the sharpshooter was one of the most dynamic scorers in school history.

He has also gathered plenty of attention and worked out for several NBA teams. His 6-foot-4 size and scoring ability making him an interesting second round prospect.

DaQuan Smith

Smith played at Murray State and eventually transferred to Radford. He has a connection to star Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant, who also attended Murray State.

The Grizzlies invited Smith in for a workout just a few days ago. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged more than 14 points per game last season for Radford and shot better than 35% from 3-point range over the last two seasons.

Blake Hinson

Hinson is a fascinating forward prospect that averaged more than 18 points per game last season at Pitt. He is expected to workout for several, if not most, NBA teams.

At 6-foot-8, Hinson has positional size. He also shot 38% or better on 3’s each of his last two college seasons.

Hinson did not get the call up to the NBA combine, but he did perform well at the G League Elite Camp. He is the type of player who could get a two-way contract.

Jonathan Mogbo

Mogbo projects as a second-round selection, but could sneak up draft boards in June.

While he isn’t a gigantic forward (6-8), he posts great numbers and uses his athleticism extremely well. Mogbo averaged more than 14 points and 10 rebounds last season for San Francisco.

He is not a stretch big man and typically plays inside of the paint but is the exact type of productive college player the Grizzlies have taken a chance on in the past when they drafted Brandon Clarke. I would keep a close eye on him, especially if he is available to be drafted in the second round.
