
The Early Word: Bishop bids adieu, and an MPD top cop lives out of state
Happy (almost) Independence Day! It’s Wednesday, July 3, and former Memphis Police officer Patric Ferguson is scheduled to appear in court today. Ferguson is charged with killing Robert Howard in 2021.
Tonight, you can catch the City of Memphis’ free fireworks show at Liberty Park, and there are shows in Bartlett, Collierville and in Horn Lake. The Memphis Redbirds game will end with fireworks, too.
On Thursday, fireworks are — finally — back Downtown for the first time in a few years with a show at Grind City Brewing. Also, Germantown, Hernando and Southaven have their Independence Day shows. And there are neighborhood parades and parties in Central Gardens, Cooper-Young and High Point Terrace. For all the details, check out our fireworks guide.
Bishop, chefs Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman’s French brasserie in Central Station Hotel, will close on July 7. The restaurant opened in late 2019, serving French classics like salad lyonnaise and tarte flambee, as well as Ticer and Hudman’s riffs on traditional fare. Central Station plans to unveil a new restaurant concept, which it says will be affordable and approachable, this fall.
After records revealed that Memphis Police Assistant Chief Shawn Jones has continued to vote in Georgia elections, the MPD told The Daily Memphian’s Samuel Hardiman that Jones' primary residence is in the Peach State. Jones served with interim MPD Chief C.J. Davis during their time in Atlanta and followed her to Memphis after her 2021 appointment and makes Jones makes about $178,000 annually as MPD’s assistant chief.
