Who the heck is Prince Mongo? And he ran for Memphis mayor?!
Robert “Prince Mongo” Hodges didn’t come close to winning the 1991 mayoral race, but his entry may have affected the outcome. (The Daily Memphian files)
When Prince Mongo’s name resurfaced in the Memphis media recently, some folks on the Internet had just one question:
Who the heck is Prince Mongo?
“I had never heard of Prince Mongo,” Lokitusaborg wrote on social media site Reddit, identifying himself as a transplant to Memphis. “What’s the stuff on him that isn’t mentioned in his Wiki page because, while that is absolutely off the wall, I’m sure lifetime locals have better stories.”
That is certainly true, as any longtime Memphian could attest. But the most surprising answer to the question might be that Mongo, a self-styled “alien” from the planet Zambodia, may well have changed Memphis’ history.
