DeSoto County DA to take proactive role in deporting immigrant inmates

Spurred by President-elect Donald Trump’s planned immigration policies, DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton plans to take a “proactive role” in removing local immigrant inmates, Barton said Friday, Nov. 22.

Through the initiative dubbed “Operation Final Departure,” Barton’s office will work with federal agencies and Trump’s border czar pick Tom Homan to “create a comprehensive strategy to address the issue of criminal activity among illegal immigrants in DeSoto County.

“The cost of illegal immigration should not be shouldered by Mississippi taxpayers,” Barton said Friday. “The federal government has neglected its duty to enforce immigration laws, so it’s time for local officials to step up.”
