Proposed federal-funding cuts could come at a cost for St. Jude, UTHSC

U.S. medical schools’ and research institutions’ budgets could be gutted if a recent Trump administration plan to reduce federal funding is allowed to stand, according to researchers.

In Memphis, the cuts could make the price of medical school more expensive and carve into work being done at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The plan, announced last week by the National Institutes of Health, would have slashed billions of dollars from medical research across the nation, including at St. Jude, by funding only a fraction of the ancillary work associated with it. The cuts were supposed to take effect Monday, Feb. 10.
