FORT WORTH, Texas — One of the first things Penny Hardaway did in his postgame press conference after learning Memphis’ NCAA Tournament fate Sunday evening was thank the selection committee.

For weeks, the Tigers’ coach and his players had seen various Bracketologists peg them as a potential No. 8 seed despite having a list of big wins that includes ones over Michigan State, Missouri, Clemson, Ole Miss and UConn.
