Lawmakers inch toward sales-tax hike to pay for ‘ungodly problem’

NASHVILLE — A bill proposing a one percentage point increase to Shelby County’s local sales and use tax passed a Tennessee Senate State and Local Government Committee on Wednesday, April 2.

The revenue generated from the tax increase would exclusively fund the construction of a new jail in Shelby County.
