Ja Morant dishes on Desmond Bane trade, Jaren Jackson Jr. extension and Ty Jerome addition

Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant made an appearance at the team’s Las Vegas Summer League game on Saturday night and addressed several of the team’s offseason moves.

Here is everything Morant had to say, question and answer style:

There’s much to learn about Tuomas Iisalo. Even for Grizzlies players.

How has it been working out this summer and what are the biggest goals for the rest of the summer?

Morant: It’s been great (and), uhhh, a lot.

What was your reaction to the Desmond Bane trade to the Orlando Magic?

I was shocked, me personally. I got the message from Des, and then you see it all over the internet. I thought the s--- was fake, honestly.

I mean, it was best for both sides. Des is going to a very talented Orlando team and I feel like he is the piece they have been missing. As for us, what we got back in veteran guards, I feel like that is big-time for us.

What do you make of the new draft pick Cedric Coward?

It’s exciting. I’m ready to see him actually hit the floor.

What do you remember about past battles with your new teammate Kentavious Caldwell-Pope?

He’s a good veteran piece. He’s obviously a champion and always goes about things the right way. I feel like for us as a team, especially in the guard spot, having him be that vet around is big time for us. Everybody knows what he does on the defensive end. For our young guys trying to push themselves to be that guy as well they got a perfect bet to learn from.

How is it being around the summer league team and seeing what they have going on?

It’s different from on TV. I know me being here in person means a lot, not only to these guys but to the organization as well. For me to be the leader of this team, I feel like it was very important, so I took a day trip.

How happy were you to see Jaren Jackson Jr. get an extension?

Very. He deserved it. That’s the heart of Memphis and the heart of this team. I definitely feel like he deserved it. I thought he would get way more (money), obviously, but I don’t understand any of the (salary) cap stuff.

What do you make of GG Jackson’s performance so far in summer league?

He’s been great. He hit me up in Utah and asked me if I was watching.

I was like, ‘You should know that.’

I just gave him some tips, and I was talking about continuing to be more aggressive. Every time he puts the ball down and knows what he wants to do with it he gets to the rim at will.

Outside of that, it’s about being a leader. It’s time for (GG Jackson) to grow in that aspect of his game. This is the perfect situation to be a third-year guy on this team with guys looking to do what you are doing.

What do you make of the Ty Jerome addition in free agency?

He’s definitely a solid guard for us. Everybody had seen what was done for a great Cleveland team (last year). It felt like he was a big piece of that team. To have him, we add another ball handler who is able to create for himself but everybody else. He’s perfect in the pick-and-roll, can shoot the ball, and he’s a guy you can play alongside. He was definitely a great pick-up for us.”
