Is Earnestine & Hazel’s really haunted? That depends on who you ask, but the spooky stories are legion

Gene Ha swears a ghost pinched his butt in Earnestine & Hazel’s.
Ha, a well-known comic-book artist, and his wife Lisa visited Memphis in 2017 for a local convention. The joined a ghost walking tour and the spectral grope happened as he was climbing the back stairs in the beloved dive bar.
“I thought it must be my wife being playful, but looked up to see her ahead of me,” he added. “Not so amused, I turned around to see who had pinched me. Behind me on the stairs, about 10 feet back, two little old ladies were struggling up the steep steps.”
Ha relates the story with good humor, but he’s just one of many who have claimed odd, even spooky encounters at the 107-year-old building downtown at the corner of Main Street and G.E. Patterson Avenue.
