Police arrest 8 in gang sweep, echoing 2024 raid
“Operations like this show our commitment to pushing back against the drivers of violent crime in our neighborhoods,” Memphis Police Department Chief C.J. Davis said in a Friday, Nov. 14, statement. (George Walker IV/AP file)
In continuing efforts to target gang activity in a neighborhood south of the Medical District, Memphis police arrested eight people, mostly for drug charges, in a Thursday, Nov. 13, sweep that also included agents from the Memphis Safe Task Force.
But a similar raid occurred in June 2024 near the intersection of Boyd Street and Tate Avenue, and almost all of those individuals charged with the most serious offenses then saw nearly all of those charges dismissed, based on court records.
Thursday’s raid targeted the 500 block of Boyd Street, not far from the intersection with Tate Avenue. That area has long been considered a hub of gang activity, especially for the smaller gang that calls itself “All Off the Blade.”
