After a long journey to get there, construction is underway on the Lakeland Community Center YMCA.

The city hosted a special groundbreaking event on Thursday, Feb. 5, at the empty and undeveloped site just north of the Interstate 40 and Canada Road interchange.

The 38,820-square-footย facility will include an early learningย child careย center, aย multipurposeย gymnasium, workout studios and fitness spaces plus locker rooms. The site will also feature a fitness airnasium and an outdoor aquatic training center with seating space.

โ€œThe whole state is looking at what we have been able to do here today with a public-private partnership,โ€ saidย Brian McLaughlin, CEO of YMCA of Memphis and the Mid-South.ย โ€œThis is one of the first public-private partnerships in the State of Tennessee,โ€
