Berlin-based artist turns photos surreal in Brooks exhibition

By , Daily Memphian Published: June 13, 2026 4:00 AM CT

The last exhibition to open in the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Overton Park is the first solo museum exhibition for David Uzochukwu.

The exhibition curator, Efe Igor Coleman, said Uzochukwu’s water-centric work excited her in part because the Brooks Museum was relocating near the Mississippi River. The Brooks Museum will become the Memphis Art Museum when the organization moves into the new Downtown space later this year.

“There was a lot of excitement thinking about the river and water in all these new ways. It also holds a very violent history, how to connect and animate and get us ready as we’re transitioning from one space to the other,” she said.

Uzochukwu, a Berlin-based photographer and filmmaker, has 22 photos now on view in “Bodies of Water”, which runs through Sept. 27.

Uzochukwu will be in conversation with Igor Coleman as part of the Brooks Museum’s Art and Aperitifs series. The free talk will be held 2-4 p.m. Saturday, June 13.
