Growing the pipeline: Inside the plan to rescue rural healthcare in Tennessee

When Becky Grando grew up in Waverly, Tennessee, she said there wasn’t much healthcare available — so little that she didn’t see a dentist until she was 18.

Grando, Tennessee Primary Care Association senior director of the Center for Quality in Community Health, said her region, and much of rural Tennessee, has limited care in certain specialties — including dental care, maternal health, behavioral health and obstetric care.

“It’s any of the care that folks would need to remain healthy — or when they’re sick or have an emergency — that they can’t get to in a reasonable amount of time,” Grando said.
