East Parkway water guy back selling drinks to thirsty drivers
Demarcus Dickerson returns to the corner of Poplar Avenue and East Parkway to sell his drinks to motorists waiting at red lights Oc.t 8. (Patrick Lantrip/The Daily Memphian)
The car honks were cacophonous, the well-wishers numerous as Demarcus Dickerson resumed his place at the corner of Poplar Avenue and East Parkway on Thursday, Oct. 8, massive cooler filled with ice and drinks at his side.
After spending more than 20 hours in jail because of an arrest that some have called overzealous law enforcement by the Memphis Police Department, Dickerson woke up early Thursday, as he does just about every day of the week.
From his Downtown home, Dickerson walked to the Kroger on Union Avenue then spent about $40 on ice as well as water, soft drinks and Gatorade. He filled up that cooler on wheels, then walked to his usual spot on the northwest corner of that intersection.
