Memphis writer wins fiction award with first book

If North Mississippi writers have a history of penning their tales in counties with fictionalized names, add local author Robert Busby to the list.

His first book, set in the fictional North Mississippi county of Claygardner, is called “Bodock: Stories” and won the C. Michael Curtis Short Story Book Prize. “Bodock” is being published by Hub City Press and will come out Tuesday, June 3.

Busby wove the short story collection against the backdrop of the 1994 ice storm, a climatic freak show of subtropical temperatures and moist Gulf air that collided with a cold front in Mid-South skies that February. Within hours, the region was covered in 2 inches of ice. It toppled trees and power lines for miles.
