U of M museum puts entire African collection on display

Visitors to the Art Museum of the University of Memphis can now view its entire nearly 800-item African art collection.

From artifacts from 1300s Central Africa to a modern-day fish-shaped coffin from Ghana, every item is on display in the museum’s Main Gallery.

This exhibition is unusual; typically museums install exhibits using select pieces while most of the collection remains in storage. While the AMUM is renovating its existing African Gallery, it’s giving visitors a rare chance to see everything at once.
