Poplar Plaza spins new development ‘angle’ at busy Highland corner

Cristina McCarter is the owner of Feast and Graze, a shop that specializes in charcuterie boards and cheese, and she was looking for a new location in East Memphis.

She took one look at a revamped empty space in Poplar Plaza, the city’s oldest shopping area and a landmark for many Memphians, and knew it would suit her needs just fine.

“It was instantly the right size. They were willing to work with me on how I wanted it to look and everything. It just seems like an easy fit for what we wanted to do,” said McCarter, who opened her business in 2019. “It’s Poplar and Highland. That’s a well-known area. It’s really close to my house, and it’s really close to a lot of my customers. It was an easy yes for me.”

McCarter will be one of the first tenants in a revamped plan for a long-stagnant part of Poplar Plaza, the former Spin Street site facing one of the city’s busiest intersections.
