A large yellow Caterpillar excavator sits in the broken parking lot of the old Gordin’s Butcher Shop waiting to clear the way for a new mixed-use development in the Smokey City neighborhood.
The Community Redevelopment Agency, working with a pair of developers, is moving forward with the first phase of Smokey City Market, an estimated $70 million project aiming to bring affordable housing, senior care, retail and green space to the area.
The CRA is a joint agency of Shelby County and the City of Memphis that focuses on removing blight and providing affordable housing.
