Ask the Memphian: What is the record snowfall in Memphis?

When Memphians checked the weather apps on their phones last week, many likely muttered a few words of profanity at what they saw: outrageous predictions of as much as two feet of snow.
The phones were wonky, of course, as nothing anywhere near that amount was actually expected by those in the know, and ultimately, just a few inches of wintry weather — mostly sleet — coated the city.
But it made some wonder: what is the city’s snowfall record? How much snow fell on Memphis during one single weather event? Well, in this week’s installment of Ask the Memphian, we thought we’d tell you that story.
