After 20 years, St. George’s will close its Memphis campus

St. George’s Independent School will close its Memphis elementary school at the end of this school year, some 20 years after the private school opened the Sherwood Forest campus in an effort to enroll more Black students.
While students can still attend the private school at its other elementary school campus in Germantown, it is also possible they won’t relocate. With approval from the University of Memphis Board of Trustees, the campus could become a public school by the fall.
The move reflects a changing education landscape in Memphis, St. George’s board members wrote to families in a Feb. 5 letter obtained by The Daily Memphian.
