In his hunt to see Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy removed from office, state Sen. Brent Taylor, R-Eads, has cited the creation of the DA’s Justice Review Unit as one justification for the ouster.
Taylor has called the unit — created in 2022 shortly after Mulroy, a Democrat, took office — controversial. In a Jan. 18 social media post, Taylor said it’s “unethical and without statutory authority to review cases of previous DAs simply because you disagree with the previous policy decisions.” Mulroy defeated Republican Amy Weirich who was running for reelection.
But such units are common across the U.S., and Shelby County’s wasn’t even a first for Tennessee. A Conviction Review Unit was established in Nashville in 2016.
