Houston, we have a Hernando native: Matthew Ramsey is NASA’s Artemis II mission manager

By , Daily Memphian Updated: April 09, 2026 3:04 PM CT | Published: April 09, 2026 3:04 PM CT

More than 50 years after humans last walked on the lunar surface, NASA is amid a program to send astronauts back to the moon, and at the helm of this historic endeavor is Hernando native Matthew Ramsey.

Serving as the mission manager for Artemis II, Ramsey is tasked with overseeing the daily preparations, ensuring hardware and operations are flight-ready and prioritizing the safety of the four-person crew.

His critical role is playing out in real time, and this phase of the plan should be completed Friday afternoon, April 10, when Artemis II is scheduled to splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California.
