Grizzlies Insider: Who has Memphis worked out ahead of the NBA Draft?

By , Daily Memphian Updated: June 15, 2023 6:52 PM CT | Published: June 15, 2023 1:11 PM CT

It’s draft season across the NBA, and the Memphis Grizzlies are set with three picks next week.

Will the team make a first-round selection? Will they trade up, as they have done often under the guidance of general manager Zach Kleiman?

The avenues are abundant this go-around, in part because they have just one main roster spot available as currently constructed and a clear need on the wing to replace free agent Dillon Brooks.

The new collective bargaining agreement also allows for three two-way players, which makes the Grizzlies’ two second-round picks useful for filling those spots.

It’s often best to take draft “whispers” with a grain of salt. This time of year, there is often as much misdirection out there as credible information.

The Grizzlies are not one of the NBA teams that releases draft workouts. Here is a list of players to reportedly work out in Memphis ahead of the June 22 draft:

Brandin Podziemski, Santa Clara

Podziemski is likely a first-round selection, and his availability is in question at pick 25. He averaged more than 19 points per game as a sophomore for Santa Clara and shot 43.8% from 3-point range.

The 6-5 guard is gifted at creating shots, which makes him a fit for the Grizzlies’ needs. ESPN’s draft expert Jonathan Givony mocked Podziemski to Memphis in his latest mock draft.

Kendric Davis, Memphis

Most Memphians are familiar with Davis already. Listed by the Tigers at 6-foot, the point guard can fill it up mid-range and around the basket. His size will be a major question as he enters the next level, but he has proven toughness and was a great college player.

Maxwell Lewis, Pepperdine

Lewis is likely to be a first-round selection and could be a great risk for the Grizzlies to take. At 6-6 with a wingspan of 7 feet, Lewis fits the mold as a useful NBA wing with potential on both sides of the floor. He shot 35% from 3-point range last season and averaged 17 points per game with a true shooting percentage of 56.8.

Opponents threw everyone at Lewis because he was the top scoring threat on his team. At the NBA level, he could have more success when used as a role player.

Trey Jemison, UAB

A 6-11 center with a strong, 260-pound build, Jemison has the body type to play in the NBA. He was a formidable rebounder with the Blazers, and was named to Conference USA’s all-defensive team. While unlikely to be drafted, he is a candidate for a two-way contract.

Jamarius Burton, Pittsburgh

Burton is a 6-4 guard and a former first team All-ACC selection. While not a great 3-point shooter in college, his 83% free-throw percentage suggests that there is reason for optimism that he could improve. He rebounds above his size, and dished out 4.3 assists per game in college. He’s a candidate for a second-round selection.

Charles Bediako, Alabama

Bediako has generated some second-round interest, but is likely to go undrafted. The 7-foot center is not a gifted scorer or offensive player. His potential is rooted in his defensive gifts protecting the rim and rebounding.

Cam Shelton, Loyola Marymount

Shelton is a 6-2 guard who could fill it up at the college level. He averaged more than 20 points per game in his fifth college season and shot 37% from 3-point range. His quickness helped him generate 1.8 steals per game last season.

Jordan Walsh, Arkansas

Walsh is not a shooter, but he has defensive tenacity and great size at 6-6 with a 7-foot wingspan. Likely a second-round selection.

(@MikeAScotto)

Seth Lundy, Penn State

Lundy is a 6-4 wing with a 6-10 wingspan. He shot 40% from 3-point range with the Nittany Lions last season. A late riser, he could be a second-round pick.

(@MikeAScotto)

Mike Bothwell, Furman

Bothwell scored 17.7 points per game at Furman last season. A 6-2 guard with experience. Likely an undrafted player.

(@FurmanHoops)

Brice Sensabaugh, Ohio State

Sensabaugh is likely to be a first-round selection. He is a bucke-getter and a 40% 3-point shooter. Defensively he has shortcomings, but his offensive firepower could make him a useful scorer at the next level, particularly off the bench.

Drew Peterson, USC

Peterson played five seasons at USC, averaging 13.9 points last season. A 6-9 guard, he has great size. He is likely to go undrafted.

(@Tobias_Bass)

Colin Castleton, Florida

Castleton is a 6-11 center with a great frame. He’s gifted at setting screens and rolling to the basket. He has not showcased a perimeter shot. He could go in the second round.

(@DWolfsonKSTP)

Hunter Maldonado, Wyoming

Maldonado played six seasons of college basketball and averaged more than 15 points in three of them. He’s a 6-7 guard who passes well but lacks 3-point shooting efficiency. He likely will be undrafted.

(@wyo_mbb)

Nathan Mensah, San Diego State

Mensah is a defensive specialist with a 7-5 wingspan. The 6-10 forward averaged 6.0 points with San Diego State last season. He is a candidate for a two-way contract.

(@AdamZagoria)

Jalen Slawson, Furman

Slawson was a leader at Furman in his senior season. The 6-7 forward averaged 15.6 points and 7.1 rebounds. He also shot 39% from 3-point range. Slawson is a tough defender and a willing passer. All of these traits make him a candidate to be selected in the second round.
