John Martin is a contributing college sports columnist for The Daily Memphian. Martin is a lifelong Memphian who’s covered the Memphis Tigers’ basketball program for more than a decade. Before joining The Daily Memphian team, he was the Memphis beat writer for The Athletic. Currently, he is the co-host of the Jason and John Show on 92.9 FM ESPN, weekdays at 11 a.m. Martin is a graduate of White Station High School and the University of Memphis.
Three weeks after the transfer portal window officially closed, the University of Memphis basketball roster for next season is essentially complete. Sure, Penny Hardaway could always add a depth piece before the season begins. But the Tigers’ work is practically finished.
As a refresher, this is a make-or-break year for Hardaway. He got rid of all his assistants from last year and hired brand new ones. After a disastrous 2025-26 season, he has to lead the Tigers back to the NCAA Tournament — or face expectations that this will be his last as the Tigers’ coach.
