Geoff Calkins has been chronicling Memphis and Memphis sports for more than two decades. He is host of "The Geoff Calkins Show" from 9-11 a.m. M-F on 92.9 FM. Calkins has been named the best sports columnist in the country five times by the Associated Press sports editors, but still figures his best columns are about the people who make Memphis what it is.

Not long after 10 a.m., Scott Fleming stood next to the Liberty Bowl — excuse me, Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium — and watched three massive machines do their destructive work.

Two banged away near the top of the old building. Another — equipped with a crab claw — took large bites out of the side.

Calkins: The flag over Liberty Stadium is more than 100 years old. Will it continue to fly?

Fleming is an architect on the project. It was all going according to plan.

“But as a Memphian, I almost can’t believe it,” he said. “The Liberty Bowl is coming down.”

Well, not all of the Liberty Bowl.
