Hearing over special DeSoto County judicial subdistrict begins

ABERDEEN, Mississippi — A room full of attorneys representing three different groups gathered Friday, July 31 to debate the merits of a judicial subdistrict that will affect voters in DeSoto County more than two hours away.
The first day of what is expected to be a days-long hearing in DeSoto County Supervisor Robert Foster’s lawsuit against the state of Mississippi began before U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock at the Aberdeen branch of the Northern Mississippi federal court.
Foster and three other county residents are suing over a judicial subdistrict the state Legislature created last year. They argue the district, comprised of a small portion of voters who mostly reside in Horn Lake, will unfairly be able to elect two new judgeships also created by the Legislature last year.
