A player who made a positive impact going against Memphis 901 FC last season has joined the city’s USL Championship side for 2020.

On Tuesday, the club continued its release of new signings with the news that Mark Segbers has joined the club from Sporting Kansas City II. The St. Louis native played twice against Memphis last season when his club was known as Swope Park Rangers, scoring his only goal of the year in the 2-2 draw in Kansas City on May 22.

“Mark is a fast and powerful right back that is strong in one-on-one match-ups and effortlessly gets up and down the channel,” said 901 FC coach Tim Mulqueen of the 23-year-old fullback.

“He has excellent ability to get great service delivered and has a proven ability to finish. Mark is very athletic, with good speed, balance and strength. He also has a very high soccer IQ.”

Following a standout college career at Wisconsin, Segbers joined USL League Two side Chicago FC United. He made one MLS appearance for New England Revolution in 2018 before going out on loan to USL Championship side Orange County FC, where he scored twice in 19 matches. Last season in Kansas City, he made 30 appearances and logged 1,944 minutes.

Pending league and federation approval, Segbers will join defender Zach Carroll, who was announced Monday, on the 901 FC roster. Those two will be part of a roster that now numbers 11; previously-announced returnees from last season are leading scorer Brandon Allen, captain Marc Burch, defenders Liam Doyle and Tristan Hodge, midfielders Pierre Da Silva, Raul Gonzalez, Dan Metzger and Leston Paul and forward Duane Muckette.

Memphis begins the season at home against Indy Eleven on March 7.
