A veteran midfielder with plenty of United Soccer League experience is the latest play addition for Memphis 901 FC.

On Thursday, the club announced that Michael Reed will join the team for the 2020 season, pending league and federation approval.

A four-year USL Championship veteran, Reed will join a midfield that will also feature Brazilian Rafael Mentzinger, who joined the team Wednesday, and four holdovers from 2019: Pierre Da Silva, Raul Gonzalez, Dan Metzger and Leston Paul.

“Michael will bring incredible professionalism, leadership and a plethora of experience to go along with his winning mentality,” head coach Tim Mulqueen said in a statement. “Michael is a box-to-box midfielder with incredible fitness and work rate. His ability to cover ground allows him to connect the lines in possession from all over the field.”

Reed, a 32-year-old native of Albuquerque, N.M., spent the last two seasons at Nashville where he served as team captain. Prior to that, he spent two seasons at San Antonio FC.

In his USL career, Reed has logged over 7,000 minutes and scored four goals.

He’s played for Minnesota and Atlanta in the North American Soccer League and was a college standout at New Mexico.

In Memphis, he’ll be reunited with former Nashville teammate Liam Doyle, who came to 901 FC in the latter half of the 2019. He’s the fourth offseason signee announced this week, joining Mentzinger, fullback Mark Segbers and defender Zach Carroll.

Memphis opens its second USL Championship season with a home game against Indy Eleven on March 7 at AutoZone Park.
