Two residents have pulled petitions for Germantown Alderman Position 3, the seat currently held by Dean Massey.

Roderick “Rod” Motley plans to challenge Sherrie Hicks for the position on the Nov. 3 ballot. He pulled a petition June 22; Hicks announced her intentions in March.

Motley has lived in the Memphis area his entire life and moved to Germantown three years ago. He and his wife, Gizelle, have two children. They agree the suburb is “home,” and he wants to become part of contributing to the city’s future.

“This is where we’re going to stay,” he said. “We fell in love with it from Day One.”

He enjoys the friendly community and the way residents come together. He also enjoys the restaurants, stores and other city offerings.

“It’s perfect,” he said of the suburb.

One day, Motley wondered who represented him on the suburb’s legislative body. That curiosity drove his desire to run.

“I love to be active,” he said. “Why can’t I run for alderman and be the person in the neighborhood that people know?”

He wants to be accessible to residents and hear their concerns in the community. Motley said he has “a passion” for the suburb and wants to help address issues that face the city and its residents.

“My family and I love Germantown. I want us to continue to grow Germantown,” he said. “Germantown is one of the greatest cities in Tennessee, and I want to keep it that way.”

He said he wants to bring an “open mind” to the board, if elected.

“I’m willing to try to bring something else they might not have,” he said. “It’s everyone coming together to make something excellent.”

Professionally, Motley has spent most of his career with UPS. He picks up and delivers packages to residential areas. Additionally, he investigates workplace issues and brings concerns and formal grievances to the attention of management.

Motley is involved in Local Teamsters 667 and participates in annual Downtown Memphis marches on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. He has not served on Germantown commissions.

He’s been involved in fitness fundraisers for St. Jude, Le Bonheur, Susan G. Komen and Alpha Omega Veterans Services. Motley is also a member of Life Church.

Four petitions pulled for Germantown’s municipal election

In addition to the seat held by Massey, alderman Positions 4 and 5 are also on the Nov. 3 ballot. Brian Ueleke has pulled a petition for Position 4, currently held by Forrest Owens. Owens has not announced if he will seek reelection.

Alderman Rocky Janda will seek re-election and pulled a petition for his Position 5 office. Jon McCreery, a local homebuilder, has not formally pulled a petition for Position 5 but has appointed a treasurer, according to Shelby County Election Commission’s financial disclosure portal.
