Moments after his team had turned in arguably it’s most impressive performance of the season, Bartlett coach Dion Real had his team back out on the practice floor, running through some drills and stressing some fine points he felt his team had missed.
“Just a little shell drill,” he said. “We gave up way too many points in the fourth quarter without scoring enough and we talked to them about that. We’ve got to be better late. Again, it’s culture, culture, culture. It’s an every day grind.”
Bartlett was on its grind for the most part Friday, getting 20 points from Terrance Jacobs and 19 more from Terrance’s older brother Tadarius as they defeated Arlington, 77-68.
The Panthers improve to 12-5 on the year while Arlington, which entered the contest ranked second in the state in Class AAA, lost for the first time in 12 games.
“Just doing what we do,” said Tadarius Jacobs, a senior who transferred to Bartlett from East in light of Shelby County Schools’ decision not to play this season.
“We knew that if we played our game, we’d come out with a victory. We feel like we’re underrated in the city right now so we came out and showed them what we’re about.”
For much of the season, Bartlett has been a second-half team and following his team’s two-point win over Briarcrest on Tuesday, Real said he hoped for better play earlier in the game. He got that in the second quarter as the Panthers played about as well as they could, scoring 25 points to take a 43-35 lead at halftime.
Bartlett continued to pour it on in the third and led 62-42 after three. Arlington, to its credit, didn’t fold; in fact, with just over six minutes left Tigers coach Maurice Miller took a time-out and emphatically told his team it would win.
And indeed, they pulled to within six with 1:37 to go on a Madison Peaster bucket that made it 74-68. The Tigers left the back door open on the next trip down though, allowing Kamrin Jones to score an easy one. Arlington was then called for a charge on its next possession before Terrance Jacobs, a junior, ended the scoring with a free throw.
“Players win games,” Real said. “It was nothing I did. These guys play so well together; that was the big thing, sharing the ball. Sharing the ball and making shots. That’s the key; if you’re making shots, everything looks good.”
Jones added 15 points while University of Memphis commit Amarr Knox, who played with the Jacobs brothers at Bellevue Middle School, finished with 11.
Peaster scored 24 to lead four Arlington players in double figures. Phillip Dotson added 18, 6-foor-9 sophomore Javar Daniel chipped in with 14 and Isaiah Jones had 10.
Arlington’s loss leaves CBHS (14-0) and FACS (9-0) as the only undefeated teams in the Shelby-Metro area.
In the girls game, it was a Taylor-made victory for Arlington.
Charmen Taylor scored 20 points and twin sister Carmen, the city’s leading scorer at just over 17 per game, added 19 as the Tigers used a strong defensive effort in the second quarter to take control before winning, 62-42.
It was a one-point game after eight minutes but Arlington (10-2) outscored the Panthers 19-4 in the second, a performance that surely pleased first-year coach Ashley Shields.
“That was the main thing we’ve focused on all week, playing defense and staying together,” Shields said. “And playing team basketball. The main thing I did coming was just trying to build relationships and trying to learn everyone individually and it’s coming along. We’re having a pretty good season.
“The main thing I tell them every day (is) ‘let’s just go out here and compete.’ As long as we’re competing, we’re getting better as a team.”
Naveah Scott scored 16 points and Sariah Conley added 15 for Bartlett and head coach Wes Shappley. Shappley, who coached Arlington to Class AAA state tournaments in 2018, 2019 and 2020, spent five seasons on the Tigers’ bench before returning to his alma mater over the summer.
