Shelby County reports 497 new cases of COVID-19

Shelby County reported 497 new cases of the novel coronavirus Sunday, Jan. 17.
The total number of cases since early March now totals 77,566.
The new cases come from a reported 4,107 tests for a daily positivity rate of 12.1%.
The health department reported 12 new deaths for a total of 1,127.
It estimates 69,755 of people with COVID-19 have recovered and 6,684 currently have the virus.
Hospital capacity continues to be tight. The most recent data is from Thursday at 5 p.m. when 533 COVID-patients were in area hospitals, 149 of those were in intensive care.
Of the staffed ICU beds in area-hospitals, 94% are occupied, and 26 are available.
The Tennessee Department of Health reports its data daily at 2 p.m. Saturday it reported a total of 680,847 cases and 605,596 of those have recovered. The state also reports 8,355 fatalities.
The state also updates its vaccine data twice per week. As of Friday 330,775 vaccines have been administered and 42,851 people have received both doses of a vaccine.
Shelby County has limited availability of the vaccine at this time and all appointments for January are filled. The Health Department has not yet announced appointments for February.
