June playlist: Black Music Month
Black Music Month is a good time to honor local musicians including hip-hop artist Al Kapone (in a file photo), says guest columnist Elizabeth Cawein. “In many cases,” she said, “the things we’re most proud of are borrowed (to use a kind word) from Black culture, almost always created by Black Memphians. Elizabeth Cawein is the founder and director of Music Export Memphis, a nonprofit export office for Memphis music. She is an adjunct professor of Music Urbanism at Rhodes College, a programmer/DJ on WYXR 91.7 FM and a national speaker on issues of music, culture and urban development.
